As a choice concrete polishing company in Texas, we have had over a decade of experience offering polished concrete floors for residential, commercial, and industrial spaces. We understand that there are a lot of terms flying around the place, but if you have been considering polishing your concrete floor, here’s what you should know about concrete polishing.
Polished concrete flooring has become popular for its superior durability and high-gloss mirror-like finish. Look around you, we use concrete for most things. Our bridges, roads, buildings are all made of concrete. If concrete can withstand the high demand placed on it, why can’t it withstand foot traffic in our homes, offices, and industrial spaces?
Polished concrete floors are known for their superior durability. Don’t expect your floors to get damaged or need a replacement after a few years. Install your floors and go to sleep.
Polished concrete floors have this mirror-like finish that makes it eye-catchy and stunning. It gives your space the highly-coveted sleek look of those high-end commercial buildings. Polished concrete floors have high-light reflectivity.
You don’t have to go overboard for polished concrete floors. They are easy to clean as they don’t harbor dust, dirt, or allergens.
Compared to other flooring options like tiles, woods, etc, polishing your concrete floors is relatively cheap. Come to think of it, the concrete itself is the finished product.
Polished concrete floors are free from toxins. The floors are not treated with harsh chemicals or sealants to achieve the desired result. In addition, it’s dustproof, allergen-proof, and doesn’t encourage insects or mold. This makes it healthy for humans and pets.
There is the misconception that polished concrete floors are slippery. Far from likely. The higher the gloss finish of concrete floors, the less slippery it is. This is because it has a high coefficient of friction.
This makes it very ideal for commercial and industrial spaces. Running your business is hard enough. You shouldn’t be thinking about your floors.
How you want your concrete floors to look is entirely up to YOU! There is a wide variety of designs (grids, radial lines, bands, borders, etc.) and colors you can choose from. You can even go further to stain or dye your concrete. You also get to choose your level of sheen. Again, it’s entirely up to YOU.
We prepare the surface by grinding. This is done to remove whatever coating is on the concrete slab. A 16-20 grit diamond abrasive is usually used.
If there are cracks or joints on the concrete surface, we seal them with a semi-rigid filler or an epoxy.
We begin to grind the surface with a diamond abrasive. This is usually with a 30 - 40 grit metal bonded diamond. Then, this is followed by an 80-grit, a 150-grit, or finer.
We apply a chemical hardener to densify the concrete surface.
This is where the polishing starts. We begin to polish the surface with a resin bond diamond grit ranging from 100 - 200. In some cases, we combine both.
We polish again using a 400 grit resin bond diamond. This is followed by an 800-grit
We finish off with a 1500-grit or 3000 grit resin bond diamond. (whichever we use depends on your desired sheen level)
This step is optional. We apply a stain guard to protect the concrete surface and make it easier to maintain.
